Sweet Charity Music by Cy Coleman, Lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Book by Neil Simon
Sweet Charity follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine, a girl who wanted to be loved. Charity is a taxi dancer, a dance partner-for-hire at a seedy dance hall in New York City. Though the job may be decidedly undesirable, Charity’s hopeful romanticism and unfailing optimism lift her out of her circumstances and help her reach for a life beyond. In the past, she’s been strung along and hung out to dry by a series of bad relationships and lousier men. When she meets Oscar, a neurotic, shy actuary seemingly from another world, will she finally find true love at last?
One of the most famous shows by legendary director/choreographer Bob Fosse and with a laugh-a-minute script by the incomparable Neil Simon, every audience is destined to fall in love with Charity’s limitless spirit, as she lives life hopefully ever after.
Charity’s adventurous journey towards love is marked by some of the best-loved songs (If My Friends Could See Me Now, There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This, I’m a Brass Band) and most iconic dance numbers (Big Spender, Rich Man’s Frug, Rhythm of Life) in Broadway history.
Charity Hope Valentine (20’s – 35)Leading role. A dancer at the Fandango Ballroom. Complex character with a great many emotions and internal conflict. Determined, fun, quirky, funny, despairing, optimistic are just some of the terms for Charity during the show.Very demanding role. The clue to the character is in her name. Any ethnicity.Alto/Mezzo with belt quality.
Helene (20s-40s): Sultry and sassy dancer at the Fandango Ballroom and one of Charity’s best friends. Mezzo with a ballsy sound and a strong dancer.
Nickie (30s-40s): Brassy New Yorker, dancer at the Fandango Ballroom, and Charity’s best friend. Mezzo with a strong belt and a very good dancer.
Vittorio Vidal (30s-40s): Italian movie star and drop dead gorgeous. Charismatic and authoritative.Has a way with the ladies and a hot-headed wife, named Ursula. Baritone.
Oscar Lindquist (30s-40s): A square and claustrophobic accountant (the most boring job in the world). with a sweet nature and a gentle touch. Well educated, well-spoken young man, shy, repressed and gawky. A reluctant romantic, he meets Charity, falls in love with her but then struggles to come to terms with Charity’s past as a taxidancer. Baritone.
Herman (30s-70s): Grizzled owner of the Fandango Ballroom, but with a heart of gold. Must be a strong tenor.
Ursula March (20s-40s): Hot headed and jealous wife of Italian movie star, Vittorio Vidal. Has quite a flair for the dramatic. Will double as several roles in Act 2. Must be a strong and versatile comedic actress and a good mover.
Daddy Brubeck (20s-50s): A groovy and hip cat who starts the Rhythm of Life revival church. Think Sammy Davis Jr., if Sammy was a flower child and loved acid. Baritone with serious soul, ability to scat, and a good mover. Strong comedic timing.
Carmen (20s-50s): Brassy dancer at the Fandango Ballroom. Very sarcastic. Good comedic actress. Must be a good dancer.
Rosie (18+): The hot new girl at the Fandango Ballroom. Fresh off the bus, but whip smart and easily corrupted. Must be a good dancer.
Suzanne, Frenchy, Betsy, Elaine (20s-50s): The featured dance hall hostesses at the Fandango Ballroom. All must be strong character actors who can dance/move with attitude in a Fosse style. A grizzled and tired bunch, working at a dead end job in Times Square. Lots and lots and lots of attitude.
Ensemble Roles (20s-50s): Good comedic character actors who can play multiple featured roles with ease. Must also be excellent singers and movers who can dance/move with attitude in a Fosse style. Will play multiple featured characters. Ensemble roles include, among others:
